Eugene Walter Alpern, age 87, passed away May 19, 2020. He was born August 30, 1932 to Philip and Blanche (Yatkowski/Yadow) Alpern. Survivors include his three sons, David, Bruce and Robert (Cara) Alpern; two grandchildren, Lena and Quinn (aka Jessica) Alpern; his brother Irwin (Barbara) Alpern; his former wife Phyllis Alpern; and several nieces and nephews. Gene grew up in Bay City, MI, earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan and then moved to the Chicago area. For decades he lived in Morton Grove, IL, and he owned and operated Saber Laboratories, a company that specialized in the manufacture of refined chemicals. He was a long-time member of Congregation B’nai Emunah in Skokie. Due to public health concerns, a private graveside funeral service will be held at Waldheim Cemetery, Forest Park, IL.
