Obituary for Iosif Gelman

Iosif Gelman (91) of Skokie, IL passed away January 30, 2023
Iosif was born on October 7th, 1931 in Murafa, Ukraine, to Yefim and Mariya Gelman.
His childhood years were spent during hard times of Holodomor in Ukraine and World War II. Iosif and his mother managed to escape the bombings and made it to the last boat that took them to the rest of their journey to Uzbekistan where they lived during the war while Iosif’s father fought on the front lines.
After the war, the family re-united and relocated to Riga, Latvia. After graduating high school in Riga, Iosif attended Moscow Power Engineering Institute and earned a graduate degree in Industrial Engineering. Iosif developed a career as an electronics maintenance engineer and traveled across the former USSR working on electronic equipment of sugar producing factories.

Iosif met his wife Sofiya in Kyiv, Ukraine and they married on August 25th, 1963. Iosif and Sofiya lived in Kyiv and had two children. In 1994, they immigrated to USA and moved to Skokie, Illinois where Iosif Gelman lived the remainder of his life.

He was a talented engineer, devoted father and husband. He enjoyed fishing, motorboats, home movie making, photography, radio electronics. Iosif was an avid reader, loved science fiction, science and technology.

He is survived by his wife, Sofiya; daughter, Luda Barr; son, Dmitriy Gelman; and grandchildren Erica Gelman, Alan Gelman, and Vyacheslav Khrapak.
