Obituary for Morton Benjamin "Mort" Berkowitz

Doctor Morton “Mort” Benjamin Berkowitz, age 96 (4/30/1926-June 7, 2022). Beloved husband of the late Barbara, nee Plotkin; devoted father of David (Jobie) Berkowitz and Gail (Grant) Kaplan; loving grandfather of, Jared, Grant, Dani, and Zach; devoted son of the late Simon and Ceila; dear brother of the late Dolores "Cookie" (Dr. Harold) Manasevit. Graduate of Steinmetz High School 1944. World War II veteran having served in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Greece. He was a bronze star recipient. Graduated from the Illinois college of optometry 1950. A Skokie resident for 60 years. Morton owned a successful private practice with 3 offices and examined patients regularly at several nursing homes Morton served as vice president and president of the Chicago Northside Optometric Society. He was the chairman of a nursing home committee, served on the Skokie Board of Health and was chairman of Aid to the Aged Committee. He was part of the board of trustees for the Illinois Vision Service Plan. He was also a member of several Lions Clubs. Over the years, he attended numerous political functions on behalf of organized optometry. 1st and foremost he was a loyal son, husband, father, grandfather and friend to many who knew him. He loved dogs, water skiing, horseback riding and exercise at the club. One of his more recent passions was volunteering at Skokie Hospital and the Skokie Police department. He always needed something to do and always kept himself busy when he could. He was a true hero not so much for his past accomplishments but for his survival over the past year. Graveside funeral services Friday, June 10th at 1:45 PM at Memorial Park Cemetery, 9900 gross Point Rd., Skokie.
