Dr. H. Pierre Eilian, MD Obituary

Dr. H. Pierre Eilian MD, 86, of Chicago IL, passed away peacefully on Sunday December 26, surrounded by his wife and children, after aggressively battling duodenal cancer.

Pierre was a devoted and supportive husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend throughout his life, and served countless patients over a 40-year career as a compassionate physician at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chicago and Highland Park Hospital and his own private radiology labs.

He modeled integrity, hard work, kindness and commitment to family throughout his life, a love for his country and its freedoms, and a passionate commitment to promoting tolerance and supporting an independent Jewish state following a childhood colored by continuous, and at times violent, antisemitism. Following his retirement, Pierre devoted his time to teaching the dangers and horrors of bigotry and racism as a docent at the Illinois Holocaust Museum.

Pierre grew up in a single-room home with six siblings in the small Jewish community of Mash-had, Iran. At age 17, the United States awarded him a merit-based scholarship to attend US college and graduate school. He worked construction, lumberjacking, and retailing while studying and supporting his family in Iran. He was first in his family to graduate college.

He graduated from Graceland College and Creighton Medical School, completed his medical internship at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital, and a Fellowship at University of Michigan Ann Arbor to become a board-certified Radiologist and later an Associate Professor of Radiology.

Pierre is survived by Charlene, his loving wife of 57 years, his three cherished children and their spouses Kevin Eilian (Kimberly), Jonathan Eilian (Amanda), and Dr. Jennifer Lotke (Mark), and nine adoring grandchildren, Kyle, Julian, Margot, Justin, Eloise, Jerome, Simon, Lewis and Leo. He is also survived by his sisters Debora Behnam and Hana Bichoupan, brother-in-law Daniel Anschel, and dozens of nieces, nephews, and cousins in the US, Europe, and Israel.

Pierre was pre-deceased by his beloved parents Nourallah and Rebkah Eilian; his “second parents” Simon and Trude Anschel; and his brothers Andre, Maurice, and Mark Eilian.

Private graveside service for family and close friends on Tuesday December 28 at noon, livestreamed at mitzvahfunerals.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Pierre to the Illinois Holocaust Museum at 847-967-4800 (www.ilholocaustmuseum.org).

Shiva will be private for the family
