Condolences

Condolence From: Florence Adebiyi (Vitas RN)
Condolence: Ms. Grauer was such a beautiful soul. Just being around her filled the atmosphere with so much love and happiness. There was never a dull moment with her. At her age she had times where she wanted to do things on her own and I would just think, wow.. this lady is so strong and independant. She loved everyone almost as much as she loved her grandchildren. She would never stopped talking about her children, especially her grandchildren. Thanks Terrie so much for informing me of this news. It really means a lot. I will never forget the most kindhearted elder I've ever met, "The Lady With The Hat" lol. We miss you Ms. Shirley Grauer -Vitas Team

Condolence From: Estelle Coffey (written by daughter Susan Fisher)
Condolence: We are so sad to learn that Shirley is no longer with us. My mom, Estelle Coffey, considers Shirley one of her very dearest and oldest friends. Theirs was a friendship of both quality and quantity. I so loved hearing the stories of their many trips and outings and how they laughed and laughed and laughed. Shirley is already missed. Please accept our condolences.

Condolence: Rachel and Erin, Grandma Shirley was a wonderful lady and loved you both very much. Always upbeat, she didn't seem to sweat the small stuff. We can all learn from that. And, her chicken schmaltz was the best!

Condolence: Terrie, Erin and Rachel, Though Grandma was not an official "neighbor", it was like she was. I often enjoyed chatting with her when she visited. Always spunky, positive and with a story to tell. Not to mention groomed to the nines! Her spirit will live on forever in all of you. May the memories you made with her bring a smile to your face and warmth to your heart. Bea

Condolence: Terrie, Sharon and Bob, my sincere condolences to your entire family. Shirley was my “other mother”. I saw her every few days when she was living in the same assisted living home as my father. Everyone who knew Shirley loved her. Shirley was a feisty, kind, outgoing, loving person. She will be missed by all, but she also left us many pleasant memories of a long, full life. Rest in peace, Shirley.

Condolence: Somewhere a journey begins at the end of the worldly existence we know, Somewhere a path stretches over the stars and rivers of memories flow…. Somewhere a silence is heard far away and the brightness of day fills the night Where the trials of life are resolved into peace when a soul finds its way to the light. Rest in peace

Condolence From: Erin OBrien
Condolence: Hi Grandma, I have been thinking about you alot today, remembering playing cards with you at the kitchen counter as you tapped your always manicured nails waiting for me to put down a card....you were the Rummy 500 Diva when I was young, and we played so many games of it that I remember actually winning some FINALLY because you were such a good teacher:) Unless you just let me win. Always so stylish, I was always intigued to see what kinds of rings, beads, or earrings you had on, and you would then let me try them on if I said OOOOH So Pretty! A special treat was you taking me in your room at your condo in des plaines and giving me some of your precious jewels:) How fun for a little girl! You were my babysitter quite often when I was younger..you were very present in my life. Visiting me every day I recall, when I was in the hospital a month when I was in sixth grade. We played cards:) You were happy to be with me, and you made me feel it every bit, thank you! I loved the ART TOURS around your apartment too. I think I have been on more than one, but there are so many stories behind each piece on your walls of your home, that I didnt mind listening to you remember where you got each one from, you were very proud of your collection, and fun to listen to. I especially liked that you looked so happy showing them to me:) Thank you for filling my tummy so many times with homemade matzo ball soup. Thank you for always telling me I am a beautiful, talented young lady. I remember one time being sad and saying to you that I wished I was your age, that I didnt enjoy being a child anymore. You told me to NEVER EVER wish my life away, that I need to live it. You were like a motherly type but also had a youthful spirit, so cute, almost could see the little girl still inside you when you talked about your mom and dad (Nonny and Papa). I could see in your eyes that the good memories were still very clear and still warmed your heart:) Grandma, I wish I was around more for you in my early adult years. I am sorry I didn t call you more. I am glad you got to meet Noah, and to see lots of photos of Hannah. They are great kids, I love being a mom, and I am glad you got to see me finally happy and settled, with my little family here...It makes me glad that you could see that I am doing good. I wish I had told you how unique and special I thought you were. You definitely knew a good balance between feisty and loving, being strong and being sensitive. I have wonderful memories of you. In my mind I picture you taller than me (YES! TALLER!) and walking the aisles of TJ max, and being full of energy and giving me alot of undivided attention. Thank you for always showing an interest in my life. I think your best trait was being YOURSELF. You seemed comfortable in your own skin. You made no apologies for being the awesome Shirley that you are, and that is the most inspiring, courageous, and much needed example of who a person should be. Themselves. YOU Grandma, you created so much joy throughout your life, with spunk, your wit, and a never tiring interest in how people you cared about were doing. FOR CERTAIN, there was only one Shirley, and there never will be another. You are an original, one of a kind, and thank you for letting me be your granddaughter, and most of all for letting me be MYSELF. Love you, see you one day when I am done down here, I miss you but hopefully it will be a while......:) You are in peaceful paradise walking with God, forever in joy, Praise Him, in my eyes its beautiful, you are finally HOME. God is good, and He must be giving you the biggest hug right now, so proud of how you lived. Just let Him win Rummy 500 once or twice a week? You were an awesome grandma thank you for everything you have ever taught me, shared with me, ....thank you for loving me:) Love ya Gram XO Erin
