Born 30 October 1948, she passed away Monday, 4 March 2024, after a brief illness. Throughout her life, Sandy was a lover and advocate of theatre, museums, art, music, literature, and travel. She was an avid reader of history, philosophy, biographies, politics, and British mysteries and studied many of those subjects at the Newberry Library after retiring in 2003. She was a Girl Scout in grade school in Chicago, active in Epsilon Iota, theatre, and art groups at Maine Township High School East, majoring in Speech and Theatre at U of I Chicago, acting on and backstage at the 11th Street (Getz) Theatre with friends and classmates that later achieved stardom. She was involved with various business associations over her long career in finance, which required her to travel regularly across the U.S. and the U.K. Sandy was an avid customer of Centuries and Sleuths Bookstore in Forest Park, a long-term member of all the local PBS stations and Animal Rescues, a dedicated Democratic activist, Anglophile, a devoted cat and dog lover, and friend, daughter, sister, niece, and cousin. She was the adored daughter of (the late) Irma and Harold Spielberg, niece of Dr Melvin M Goldstein (Marylou), beloved sister of Ronda Scott-Marak (Roman Marak), Natalie Donovan (Michael), sister by choice of Rosemarie (Edwin) Reinante, and sister-in-law once removed of Cathryn Marak-Hairston (Sam Hairston); aunt of Kris Donovan (Patty Thomas), Adelaine Reinante Palacios (Rjeff Palacios), and Great Aunt of James Donovan, Cherished cousin of Lawrence Goldstein (Rolla), Steven Goldstein, Alice Biner, Rebecca Biner-Savlin (David Savlin), Gloria Kolenc, Donald Verplanke, Crystal Ann Verplanke, Seymour (Mike) Fishman; cousin of Carol (the late Bud) Zakin, Marilyn (the late Sanford) Schoen, Joanne (Gerald) Levin, (the late) Edrice and Ernest Bram, (the late) Myron Gelt (Linda), Renee Greenman Harrington (the late) Eddy Clearwater, Marian (the late Edward) Lezak, (the late) Joan Weiser, and 2nd and 3rd generation cousins. She was the devoted friend of Karen Kitover, Cher Doherty (Michael), Patricia Smith, James Niehaus, and neighbours and friends who loved her. It wasn’t unexpected, but it was still a shock, impossible to prepare for. Yesterday started out as another day, a day of worry, but we had no idea how the day would end. It was our last day with you in our world. One doesn’t wake up thinking of last memories, last moments, last breaths. You have left us to grieve and remember, in tears and laughter, the light and laughter you brought to our lives. Every day, from the moment you left us, will have a hole in its centre that only your memory can fill. We are the stuff that you have made us, and that hole in our hearts will never truly empty nor truly be filled again. You will live within our hearts and in our minds forever. You will be met by those who loved and missed you, your parents, grandparents, and loved ones who went before, as we will now love and miss you until we are together again. You will never be alone. You will always be with them and with us. I know we will be together again someday, so neither are we left alone —but you will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Misericordia Home or any Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Animal, or Autism charity of your choice. Info Mitzvah Memorial funerals, 630-MITZVAH 630-648-9824
