The History of Mitzvah Memorial Funerals

When the founder of Mitzvah Memorial Funerals (Lloyd Mandel) opened his former business-Lloyd Mandel Funeral Direction (later Lloyd Mandel Levayah Funerals)-in 1989, it was the first new Jewish funeral business in Chicago in over 50 years.  There were only 4 Jewish funeral business to choose from (Piser, Weinstein, Furth and Levayah Funerals)  Now there are many Chicago Jewish funeral businesses to choose from.

Mitzvah Memorial Funerals is unique in that it is both independently Jewish owned and operated and that it doesn't operate a funeral home with chapels. Families who turn to us during a time of loss, or for pre-arrangement services experience our very high standards of service. These standards include transparency in business practices and service pricing, as well as:

  • Providing families with well-planned funeral arrangements and compassionate professional funeral service in their time of need.
  • Providing families who choose to hold the funeral service at graveside, or from a Synagogue (theirs or those that are available to non-members) or from cemetery chapels that are available to lot owners the ability not to pay the overhead of a funeral home with chapels they are not using.
  • Helping families in our community to preserve longstanding Jewish traditions and customs.
  • Assisting families and individuals making their pre-need plans.
  • Accepting pre-need plans made elsewhere (all of these are easily transferable) and in most cases refunding the family thousands of dollars.
  • Openly showing all of our prices for services and merchandise on our website (something none of our competitors have done since we opened in 2010) and also offering many selections of dignified lower priced caskets.
  • We offer professional guidance and personal attention before, during and after the loss of a loved one. Our reputation for honesty and integrity is very well-known, and it is our most valuable asset.
